Two Dancers have been slapped with an 18-year jail term each by a Circuit Court in Accra for conspiracy and robbery.
The Convicts are Daniel Armah and Bernard Owusu. They robbed one Gloria Adjei of her Infinix hot note mobile phone and ladiesf handbag, containing one Apple iPad, both items valued at GH 3,300.00 cedis and a purse with cash in the sum of GH 400.00 cedis, all items to the tune of GH 3,700.00 at La in Accra, the Prosecution said.
In both their preliminary statements and evidence-in-chief before the Court, the Convicts who were charged with conspiracy and robbery denied the charges leveled against them by the Police.
After full trial of the case, the Court found Daniel and Bernard guilty of the offences preferred against them.
The court, presided over by His Honour, Aboagye Tandoh held the view that the Convicts were inconsistent during their defence in open court, describing their evidence-in-chief as an afterthought, devoid of credit.
His Honour however found the Prosecutionfs witnesses credible and consistent, adding that the Prosecutor was able to adduce sufficient evidence against the Convicts that they indeed committed the offences of conspiracy and robbery.
Having taken into consideration the Convictsf plea for mitigation, the Presiding Judge said that the conduct of the Convicts warranted a deterrent sentence to signal societal disapproval of robbery especially in places (La Beach) of pleasure and economic gain.
Daniel and Bernard were sentenced to 18 years each in prison with hard labour on each count, the sentences to run concurrently.
Background to the Case
Narrating the brief facts of the case in court, the Prosecutor, Chief Inspector Afful said that the Complainant, Gloria Adjei is a student who lives at Danfa, a suburb of Accra whilst the first and second Accused persons, Daniel Armah (A1) and Bernard Owusu (A2) are dancers who reside at Teshie in Accra.
The Police Officer also informed the court that on the 6th of January, 2016, at about 5:00 pm, the Complainant went to La Pleasure Beach in the company of her friend, Mariam Gyan to have fun. He added that at about 9:00pm when the Complainant and her friend were getting ready to go home, the two Accused persons attacked them with a machete, stating that Bernard Owusu removed one Infinix hot note mobile phone from the Complainantfs back pocket whilst Daniel Armah who was holding a machete also snatched the Complainantfs handbag, containing one Apple iPad. They also snatched a purse with cash of GH 400.00 cedis from Complainantfs friend but the Complainant quickly held the bag.
Chief Inspector Afful further stated that Daniel then used the machete to hit the Complainant several times and managed to collect the handbag, adding that the Accused persons took to their heels but were given a hot chase by the Complainant and other witnesses who managed to arrest them.
The Prosecutor also told the court that the Accused persons were later handed over to the La Police, and charged with the offences of conspiracy and robbery respectively.
