The Chairman for the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Accounts, Mr. James Klutse Avedzi, has directed the former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Heavy Equipment Limited (GHEL), Mr.Yiadaba Mahami,  to pay all outstanding debts within one month.

The Chairman of the Committee who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Ketu North pointed out that the Committee has given one month ultimatum to Mr. Mahami, to pay an amount of GH64,699.04 to the Company.
Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee, Mr. Mahami stated that he took the money from the Company for some important works on his personal machine.
Mr. Mahami was cited in the 2016 Auditors-General’s report for owing the Company to the tune of GH64,699.04.
The Auditors-General’s report recommended that the money should be paid with interest at bank rate to the Company.
Reaction from the former CEO
Mr. Mahami told the Committee that he had already paid some of the money and currently owes the Company GHC43,000.
He told the Committee that the Company is indebted to him to a tune of GHC100,000 for his rent, salary for half of 2017 and housing allowance.
In his response to the report of the Auditor-General, Mr. Mahami lamented that the auditors were unfair to him by not giving him the opportunity, to respond to their findings before making it known to the public.
Mr. Mahami further explained that he had brought a lot of transformation to the Company, and that he did not intend to cheat the Company.
“It is not my intention to cheat Ghana Heavy Equipment after running it for sixteen good years. I have provided good services to the Company from 2000 to date. I am pleading to the Committee to also appreciate my good work”, he added.
