The Minister-Designate for Upper East Region, Ms. Paulina Patience Abayage, has pointed out that the youth should be encouraged to focus on agriculture to reduce youth unemployment rate in the country.
She stated that the Upper East Region is endowed with organic cereals, vegetables and fruits, which when well packed and exported, will generate revenue for the country.
Appearing before the Appointments Committee in Parliament presided over by Hon. Joseph Osei Owusu, Ms. Abayage indicated that the availability of cereals, vegetables and fruits in the Upper East Region can serve as an opportunity for the youth in the country to engage in farming on commercial bases.
“The availability of cereals, sweet potatoes, onions, watermelons in the region can be huge opportunity for the youth. These are the areas in agriculture that the country must pay much attention to and encourage the youth to invest in terms of farming. This can be a huge investment for the country. The agricultural products in the region are organic and can be exported”, she reiterated.
She suggested that financial support should be given to the producers of the organic agricultural products for expansion and commercial production.
Ms. Abayage in her submission informed the Committee that the organic cereals, vegetables and fruits from the region can be processed, packaged and exported to other countries purposely for foreign exchange
