A twenty-two year old Nigerian, Jennifer Chizoba Jeremiah, has been sentenced to five years imprisonment by an Accra Circuit court for human trafficking.
The second Accused in this case, eighteen- year old Angel Chioma Jeremiah, was also found guilty of abetment of crime and convicted, but had her sentence deferred because of her age.
The Court presided over by Her Honour Jane Harriet Naa AKweley Quaye, also ordered a social enquiry on the second Accused.
The facts of this case are that, the Complainant, Amadi Gloria Chanagorom, is a student , while Accused persons, Jennifer Chizoba Jeremiah and Angel Chioma Jeremiah are business woman and student respectively.
The Complainant and the Accused persons reside at Roman, Kasoa and they are all Nigerians.
On 20th March, 2018, the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, CID Headquarters, received a complaint from the Complainant that on 9th March, 2018, the first Accused person, Jennifer Chizoba Jeremiah, with the assistance of one “Kulest”, in Nigeria, recruited and transported her to Ghana, and forced her into prostitution.
Following the complaint, a team of personnel from the Unit, led by the Unit Commander, arrested the Accused to assist in investigations.
The room of the Accused persons was searched and the following were found: one UBA ATM Master Card bearing the name Jeremiah Esther Chizoba, one Auch Polytechnic Student Identity Card bearing the name Akabueze Angel Chioma, cash of Ghc 2,400.00, one Nigerian passport bearing the name Joy Edikan Gabriel with the picture of the first Accused together with a certificate of vaccination, one ‘Kiss’condom one pack of ‘Protector Gold Plus’ condom, one water-based condom lubricant, one West African Examination Council Statement from Nigeria, one testimonial attestation and recommendation from Vantage International Senior High School- Nigeria, one West African Examination Council Certificate, all bearing the names of the first Accused, one iPhone 7 plus containing a naked video of the Complainant, one ‘Ghana Schools’ exercise book and one ‘Conjugal Bliss” note pad, used in recording monies paid by the Complainant and other Victims to the first Accused, after having sex with men.
The Accused persons admitted the offence during interrogation.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the first Accused recruited and transported the Complainant and other Nigerian Victims, to Ghana on 9th March, 2018, under the pretext of engaging them as sales girls but ended up using them for prostitution.
Investigations further revealed that the first Accused filmed the nakedness of the Complainant and threatened to publish the video on social media if she refuses to be a sex worker and pay her (first Accused) the proceeds.
The Complainant was forced to have sex with men, and the proceeds amounting to GhC 150.00 was paid to the first Accused.
Investigations revealed that the second Accused stays with the first Accused as friends and she uses her mobile phone to chat with men on social media, to connect the Complainant and the other Nigerian Victims to men and proceeds paid to the Accused persons.
