The Appointments Committee of Parliament, has rescheduled the date for the vetting of four recently nominated Justices to the Supreme Court by the President, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo.
In a letter signed by the Acting Director of Public Affairs of Parliament, Ms. Kate Addo, the vetting is rescheduled from August 23 to August 24, 2018.
On Thursday, August 23, the committee will vet Professor Nii Ashie Kotey and Justice Samuel K. Marful-Sau.
The Appointments Committee on Friday, August 24, will vet Justice Agnes Mercy Abla Dordzie and Mr. Nene A. O. Amegatcher.
In June this year, the committee scheduled the date for vetting from Monday, August 20 to Thursday, August 24 but the recent changes in dates is due to the additional roles played by some members of the Appointments Committee on other committees.
The newly nominated Justices to the Supreme Court
Mr. Nene A. O. Amegatcher is a former president of the Ghana Bar Association. He is a member of the Ghana General Legal Council. He is the managing partner of Sam Okudzeto & Associates and has over 31 years of experience as a barrister and solicitor. Mr. Amegatcher has been a consultant to the World Bank on Administrative Law, Arbitration and ADR mechanisms under its Legal Sector Reform Project.
Professor Nii Ashie Kotey is the former Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Ghana, Legon and former acting Director of the Ghana School of Law. He was a director of the Ghana Legal Literacy and Resource Foundation and the General Legal Council. Prof. Kotey was an Associate Professor with the Faculty of Law, University of Ghana, and for over 30 years, he was involved in development of higher education and civic issues.
Justice Marful-Sau is a justice of the Appeals Court. On April 10, 2010, he acquitted Mr. Kwadwo Mpiani and Dr Charles Wereko-Brobby on charges of causing financial loss to the state in the Ghana@50 saga. In dismissing the case against the two government officials, Justice Marful-Sau held that the findings of the Commission of Inquiry could not be the basis of criminal charges against the two.
Justice Agnes M.A Dodzie is a justice of the Appeals court. She has served on a number of committees such as the Dordzie Committee, involving cocaine-turned sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) saga. She was also a member of the Chief Justice’s five-member committee, involving the impeachment of the Electoral Commissioners
