On the issue of the Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong using uncharitable words against the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu and MPs, Second Majority Whip, Mathew Nyindam in an interview noted that the Privileges Committee will make a pronouncement on the matter this week.
Mr. Nyindam stated that the Assin Central MP who had been hauled before the Privileges Committee is not in the country at the moment.
According to the Kpandi MP, the First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei-Owusu is the chairman of the committee and he has assured members of the House to be patient since the committee will make a pronouncement this week.
In an encounter with Ghana justice, Mr. Nyindam indicated that the findings of the committee will be credible to indicate the seriousness of Parliament.
Background of issue
On Tuesday June 5, 2018, the Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, criticised the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, for his tirades directed at the investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
Speaking on the issue, he described Kennedy Agyapong’s scathing verbal attacks against Anas as “regrettable”. “If you question his methods, does that mean you should launch a personal blistering attack on the person? Stating emphatically that he is corrupt and so on and so forth. We should be careful, especially us as Members of Parliament,” Mr Kyei Mensah-Bonsu had said.
To counter the claims of Osei Kyei Mensah- Bonsu, Kennedy Agyapong described the House as “useless” for having Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu as its Majority Leader.
The vitriolic statement by the Assin Central MP aroused anger in MPs on both sides of the House, who agreed to the request to haul Kennedy Agyapong before the Committee.
Mr. Joe Osei Wusu said if indeed Assin Central MP made such utterances then he has breached the law and needs to be brought before the House.
“If indeed he uttered those words, they are clearly against order 28 and order 30 rule 2. I direct that Mr Kennedy Agyapong, MP for Assin Central Agyapong appears before the Privileges Committee for the Committee to determine whether indeed he uttered those words which are attributed to him and also recommend the appropriate sanction,”
