The Legon Divisional Police Command has arrested a man for allegedly robbing a taxi driver at gun point at Apollonian near, Ashiaman, in the Greater Accra Region.
The prosecutor informed an Accra Circuit, presided over by His Honour, Mr. Aboagye Tandoh, that on the 25th of April, 2018, the Legon Police, through intelligence, identified the accused, Ebenezer Oklu, who had in his possession a Hyundai Getz taxi car with the registration number GR2896-16 suspected to be a stolen vehicle, which he intended to sell to a prospective buyer for it to be dismantled and sold as scrap. The prosecutor further explained that a plain-cloth police officer went to the Accused’s residence and feigned interest in the car. The officer bargained with the Accused over the price and settled on GH9,000.00. The officer then requested that the Accused follow him to American House for payment. On their arrival, the officer called for reinforcement and the Accused was arrested and the car, retrieved. While investigations were ongoing to locate the owner of the car, the complainant, Alhassan Ibrahim told the police that on the 25th of April, 2018, the car was snatched from him at Apollonian at gun-point. Further investigations disclosed that in 2016, the owner of the car gave it to the Accused for it to be paid for in instalment but the Accused failed to honour the said terms and conditions. The Accused abandoned the car and the owner went for the car, repaired it and gave it to the complainant for work. The Accused and his accomplice attacked the complainant and robbed him of the car.
The accused pleaded not guilty. The counsel for the accused, Augustus Asafoagyei, informed the court that there was a valid contract between the owner of the vehicle and the Accused. The counsel for the Accused again stated that there was no robbery perpetuated by the Accused, rather, the Accused had an agreement with the owner of the car.
The prosecutor on the other hand informed the court that the complainant is a driver to the owner of the stolen car and the Accused knows the owner of the vehicle and not the complainant. The complainant again informed the court that he had never seen the Accused and the only time he saw the Accused was the time of robbery at a gun-point.
The counsel for the Accused pleaded with the court for bail which was granted in the sum of GH40,000 with two sureties to be justified. The case was adjourned to the 21st May, 2018.
