Ekow Annan, a drinking bar operator, together with Mohammed Iddris, a trader, and Jacob Nii Aryitey Thompson have been arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court for conspiracy to commit robbery, and robbery.

All Accused persons pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the charges levelled against them.

In reading the brief facts, Chief Inspector Mawunyo Nanegbe stated that the Complainant, Shang Ya Wei, is a Chinese national resident at 37, a suburb of Accra.

The First Accused Mohammed Idris is a Nigerian national resident at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, a suburb of Accra. The Second Accused person, Jacob Nii Aryitey Thompson, is an electric welder, whilst the Third Accused, Ekow Annan, is a drinking bar operator at Adabraka.

On the 18th of November 2017, at about 10:30 pm, the Complainant and his Chinese brother, Zhu Jun Sha, hired the services of a taxi driver at 37 to take them to a place where they could have fun. The taxi driver took them to Kumbaland Hotel at Adabraka.

Whilst the Complainant and Zhu Jun Sha were having fun with their lady friends at the hotel, the taxi driver approached the First Accused that he had brought some Chinese to the hotel and suspected that they were carrying a lot of money in their bag.

The taxi driver convinced the First Accused to get some men to snatch the bag of the Complainant.

The First Accused then discussed the issue with the Second Accused, who also introduced the Third Accused as the right person to do the job.

When the Complainant and his brother were done having fun, the taxi driver took them, under the  guise of sending them back to 37 but upon reaching the spot where the First and the Second Accused were hiding he intentionally stopped the car pretending the engine had developed a fault.

Suddenly, the First and the Second Accused persons rushed on them and the Second Accused punched the Complainant’s face and snatched his bag, containing GH¢1,000.00 and his residence permit.

On 20th November 2017, the First and the Second Accused persons were arrested upon a tip off by the Third Accused, who was dissatisfied with his share of the money.

During interrogation, they all admitted the offence and revealed that the First Accused Second Accused and the taxi driver, received GH¢100.00 each as their share of the money, whilst the Third Accused received GH¢50.00.

The Third Accused refunded his share of the booty to the Police. Efforts are being made by the Police to arrest the taxi driver.

The case has been adjourned to 11th December 2017.
