An Accra Circuit Court, presided over by His Honour, Mr. Aboagye Tandoh, has sentenced a widower and father of eight children, to ten years with hard labour for possessing narcotic drugs without lawful authority.
Counsel for the Accused, before the sentencing, prayed the court to serve the Accused with the minimum sentence since he had lost his wife and was a single father of eight children.
Brief Facts
The Complainants are policemen from Alpha Swat Unity in Accra. The Accused, Stephen Gbafah, is a security man with COB ‘A’ Industries Limited, producers of Standard Water.
On 3rd October, 2015, at 5:00pm, the Complainants had information that the Accused had taken delivery of a sack containing some substances suspected to be Indian Hemp at Agbogbloshie onion market. The Accused then chartered a taxi heading towards the 37 Military Hospital.
The Complainants quickly proceeded to Kanda Highway and caught the Accused person and one Reindorf Anthony on board the cab.
They stopped the driver and arrested the Accused together with Reindorf Anthony. The cab was searched on the spot and 42 brownish parcels containing dried leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp, were found in the boot.
The Accused, Reindorf Anthony, and the parcels were sent to the Greater Accra Regional Crime investigation Department (CID).
At the CID, the Accused stated that it was his son Courage Gbafah, who sent the parcels to him from Hohoe and that Reindorf Anthony was only a friend whom he pleaded with to accompany him to Agbogbloshie to receive the parcels.
