Three suspected armed robbers, James Tetteh, Emmanuel Kelly and Joseph Kpakpo Allotey, were nabbed by the police at Madina Zongo, after an iPhone which they stole, among other items, had a tracking device installed in it and tracked them.
The accused persons, on 30th March, 2017, at about 1:30am, climbed the fence wall to the Complainants’ house, forced open the burglar proof window and entered their home.
At gunpoint, they ordered the Complainants to lie down and robbed them of cash, the sum of 19,950 US dollars, 5000 euros, 900 pounds sterling, 8000 cedis, three mobile phones, one iPad and a box containing jewellery.
At about 3:00 am, a witness in the case through a tracking device which was installed on her iPhone by one of the Complainants, assisted the police to track and arrest James Tetteh and Emmanuel Kelly. Joseph Allotey managed to escape.
A search conducted in Joseph Allotey’s room revealed cash, the sum of 19, 950 US dollars, 900 pounds sterling, 5000 euros, 410 Ghana cedis, three mobile phones, an iPad and a box containing jewellery.
On 25th June, 2016, Joseph Allotey who went into hiding, was arrested by the Police at Madina.
The three accused persons were charged with the offences of conspiracy to commit crime to wit, robbery; and robbery. They pleaded not guilty leading to a full trial.
After the trial, James Tetteh and Emmanuel Kelly were convicted and each sentenced to 22 years for each count, to be served concurrently.
The third accused, Joseph Allotey, who according to the presiding judge, Justice Aboagye Tandoh, was the mastermind behind the robbery, was also convicted and slapped with a 25 years jail sentence with hard labour for each count, to be served concurrently.
Although the Defence Counsel prayed the court to give them the minimum sentence, the judge said the sentence would serve as a deterrent to others who commit crime.
