Tailor sentenced to 10 years for defilement

A tailor, Maxwell Antwi, alias Akora, has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court, for defiling a seven year old girl.

This was after the Accused person pleaded not guilty and underwent a full trial.

The facts of the case as read by the judge, Her Honour, Abena Oppong Adjin Doku, are that, the Complainant in the case, Vincent Koesemefia, is a mason and father of the seven-year old victim, whilst the Accused person, Maxwell Antwi, alias Akora, is a tailor.

The Complainant, victim and Accused person live at Baatsona, Peace and Love area.

On 4th August, 2016, at about 10am, the victim complained about abdominal pains, with little drops of blood stains in her pants, which she showed to her parents.

When she was questioned as to whether she had been carnally known by a man, she answered in the negative.

On 16th August, 2016, at about 3:30pm, the victim again saw blood stains in her pants and drew the attention of her mother, who also informed the Complainant about it.

When the victim was questioned, she recounted that during the month of July,2016, she went playing in the Accused person’s compound and the Accused came and carried her into his room upstairs of an uncompleted building, where he removed her clothes and pants, put her on the floor at a supine position and had sexual intercourse with her.

After the act, the Accused warned the Victim not to disclose it to anyone or she will die.

The Victim, for fear of her life, also kept it to herself until she started experiencing blood stains in her pants and pains in her abdomen, and told her parents about her ordeal.

The matter was reported to the police at the Baatsona Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), and a medical form was issued to the Complainant to send the Victim to a hospital for medical examination.

The Accused was subsequently arrested, and he denied the allegation in his cautioned statement.
