Akpeteshie’ seller in court for possessing narcotics

A 34- year old akpeteshie seller, Adjoa Frimpomaa, has been arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court for selling ‘akpeteshie’ mixed with substances suspected to be narcotics.

The Accused person pleaded not guilty to the charge of possessing narcotics without lawful authority.

The facts of the case as presented by the Prosecutor, Chief Inspector Victor Dosoo, are that, the Complainants in the case are police officers stationed at the Kwabenya District, while the Accused is a trader and lives at Taifa- ‘Mr. Agyei’.

On 3rd September, 2018, at about 1:00pm, the Complainants were on their usual patrol, when they gathered intelligence that the Accused was selling drinks, laced with narcotic substances at her drinking bar.

The team therefore, visited the said drinking bar located at Taifa- ‘Mr. Agyei’ and met the Accused person.

A search at the drinking spot, led to the discovery of four plastic containers of ‘akpeteshie’, a local gin, laced with plant materials suspected to be cannabis.

Also found at the bar were one and a half gallons of similar drinks.

The exhibits were retrieved and the Accused person was subsequently arrested and taken to the Police Station, together with the exhibits, and a formal report made.

The substance suspected to be narcotics will be forwarded to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis and report.

Counsel for the Accused person, prayed the Court to admit the Accused person to bail.

He said that the Accused person is a nursing mother, has a fixed place of abode, and will avail herself when trial commences.

The Court, presided over by Her Honour, Mrs. Jane Harriet Naa Akweley Quaye, admitted the Accused to bail in the sum of GHC 20,000.00 with one surety who is in gainful employment.

The case has been adjourned to 27th September, 2018.
