The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested and charged three suspects for illegal trade and possession of narcotics. The accused persons, Eugene Senyo Gomashie, Prince Osei Anokye and Kelvin, have been charged, among others, with illegal possession of narcotic drugs contrary to section 2(1) of PNDC Law 236 .
Presenting the facts of the case to an Accra Circuit Court, presided over by His Honour, Mr. Aboagye Tandoh, the prosecuting officer, Chief Inspector Adu stated that the first accused is a drinking bar operator and their illegal operations were carried out at the bar.
On 23rd April, 2018 at about 9:00am, the Nina Divisional Command had intelligence to the effect that some people were peddling narcotic substances at Odawna in Accra. Policeman from the Division were dispatched to the area where the first accused, Eugene Senyo Gomashie, owner of “Agye Nyame Adwoa Sika” Drinking Bar had engaged the second and third accused persons to distribute and sell dried leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp in the drinking bar.
A search conducted in the bar led to the retrieval of some quantities of the dried leaves in a polythene bag whilst 15 wrappers and 2 slides of compact dried leaves were also found in the possession of the second and third accused respectively. The second and third accused were arrested by the Nima police and during interrogation, they mentioned the first accused as the owner of the dried leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp and he was later arrested.
The exhibit of dried leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp are yet to be sent to the forensic laboratory for examination.
The accused persons pleaded not guilty. The counsel for the accused persons prayed for bail but the court refused the application. The case was adjourned to 28th May, 2018.
