Ghana’s Professor Mrs Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu put up a good fight but she was not elected by the Assembly of States Parties to the International Criminal Court (ICC) as a Judge after nine rounds of voting at the UN Headquarters in New York.
At the end of nine rounds of voting, six judges were elected. They are: Tomoko Akane (Japan), Solomy Balungi Bossa (Uganda), Reine Adelaide Sophie Alapini-Gansou (Benin), Luz del Carmen Ibáñez Carranza (Peru), Kimberly Prost (Canada) and Rosario Salvatore Aitala (Italy).
Executive Director of the Africa Center for International Law and Accountability (ACILA) said: “Those who were expecting to be elected some of them did not make it. Our candidate from Ghana put up a good showing but there were things which went against her.
“One of it was that she was not endorsed by the African Union (AU) which endorsed three other candidates from Losotho, Uganda and Benin,” Mr Nyarko who is attending the meeting of the Assembly of States Parties to the ICC that elected the judges, told Class FM on Thursday, Dec 7.
A delegation from Ghana which included Attorney General, Gloria Akuffo and Minister-at-large, Dr Edward Mahama were in New York to support Prof Mensa-Bonsu.
