Godwin Torvudzo (1st Accused), a 24- year old carpenter and his brother Gabriel Amewusika (2nd Accused), a 35- year old driver who reside in Ashaiman have been arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court for conspiracy to commit crime and for causing harm.
The Accused persons pleaded not guilty to both charges.
According to the prosecutor, Simon Tokpor, the Complainant, Alimatu Saadia is a petty trader who lives in the same house with the 1st Accused. The Prosecution further stated that the 1st Accused beats the Complainant at the least provocation.
The prosecutor said that on the 28th of September 2017 at about 8:30pm, the Complainant asked the 1st Accused for housekeeping money. He got angry, beat up the complainant and dragged her on the floor. He also threatened to kill their 4-month old baby.
According to Inspector Tokpor, the 2nd Accused, who is an older brother of the 1st Accused, went to the house and also beat up the complainant. The complainant sustained multiple bruises on her face.
The prosecutor said that the 1st Accused subsequently attacked the Complainant again with an iron rod, for asking him for money for her upkeep.
Inspector Tokpor explained that the Complainant suffered a broken arm as a result of the beating.
The Complainant reported the matter to the Dansoman Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU).Accused persons were subsequently arrested. A medical report form was issued for her to seek treatment.
Counsel for the Accused persons pleaded for the court to grant bail to the Accused persons stating that they both had a permanent place of abode and had people who will readily avail themselves to be sureties.
The court, presided over by Justice Aboagye Tandoh granted the Accused persons bail in the sum of GH¢20,000 with two sureties and ordered them to report to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) every Thursday.
The case was adjourned to 23rd November, 2017.
