The New Patriotic Party (NPP) government has been criticised for virtually giving the youth of the country a raw deal in its 2018 budget statement and financial policy. According to Gideon Tetteh, a law student at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), government cannot profess to create jobs for the youth in the budget when it is dismissing same youth at the various state institutions.
The GIMPA law student made the observation on TV3’s Special Edition of the New Day on Friday hosted by the four finalists of the 2017 Ghana’s Most Beautiful. “This government has not been fair to the youth at all because in less than one year, your job creation that you promised which was pivotal in your campaign has been the opposite,” Gideon Tetteh who is also an NDC Communicator said. “If you sacked close to 15, 000 people, then you are saying you are going to create employment, then what are you telling us?” he asked.
He said “it is very, very difficult to survive in this economy. Whatever they do they are politicians and we are the youth… we will feel the pinch”. On his part, the Acting Deputy Communications Director of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ekow Vincent Assafuah, highlighted the achievements of the government, citing the reduction in electricity tariff.
He also mentioned that “currently, nurses to patients ratio has also been dealt with and this will create employment”, and therefore accused the opposition of turning a blind eye to the good policies of the government.. Central Regional representative on GMB 2017, Baaba and representative from the Eastern Region, Serwaa, were made to host the News Review segment of the magazine. Zeinab from the Northern Region and Nana from the Western Region also hosted various segments of the show.
