The Minister for the Interior, Mr. Ambrose Dery, says conducting fire safety audit in high rise buildings in the country is not enough to prevent fire outbreak.

He said this in Parliament, when he was responding to a question posed by the Member of Parliament for Kumbungu constituency, Hon. Ras Mubarak. The MP asked him whether fire safety checks have been undertaken in public high rise buildings across the country.

The Minister answered in the affirmative, explaining that the Ghana National Fire Service has conducted a diligent fire safety audit in public high rise buildings. He added that fire safety audit checks were conducted on 890 public buildings across the country.

He said there were 36 high rise buildings which included the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, the Cedi House and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation.

He indicated that the Fire Service is taking occupants of high rise buildings through fire safety simulation exercises, to test fire safety installations and evacuation procedures. He added that the result will help the Fire Service to advise occupants accordingly.

The Minister also said that all national institutions have been advised to have fire safety focal persons, to collaborate with the Service for training of staff.
