The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hon. Elizabeth Afoley Quaye, says her Ministry is making arrangements to resume supply of outboard motors to fishermen through the Assemblies.
She said this on the floor of Parliament, when she was responding to a question asked by the Member of Parliament for Sene East, Hon. Dominic Napare, on whether the Ministry has plans to continue the supply of outboard motors and other fishing inputs to fishermen.
She said the Ministry is considering the supply of fishing nets, to ensure fishermen use the required net sizes for fishing.
The Minister also said the supply of outboard motors will improve the operations of artisanal fishermen. She said women in the fishing sector will also be supported.
She informed the House that in 2015 and 2016, the government in collaboration with the Metropolitan, the Municipal and the District Assemblies, supplied over 2,000 (two thousand) outboard motors to fishermen in the four coastal regions and the inland fishing areas.
She assured the House of the government’s commitment to pursuing policies that would improve the living standards of fisher-folk.
