Unemployed Man jailed 10 years for robbery


An unemployed Man, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison, with hard labour, by a Circuit Court in Accra, for robbery.

The Convict, Rashid Sulley, who was on a motorbike with his accomplice, attempted to snatch one Grace Attram’s handbag, but she held on to it. The Convict and his accomplice, according to court documents, pulled the Complainant on the ground, and in the process, they fell from the motorbike. The Complainant raised an alarm, but the Convict and his accomplice got on the motorbike and attempted to escape, after they had abandoned the Complainant’s handbag. The incident happened at Dansoman, a suburb of Accra.

A witness in the case, according to the Prosecution, who was in his car, when the incident was happening, chased the Convict and his accomplice with his car and they fell into a gutter. The Convict tried to run away, but was chased and arrested. His accomplice, however, escaped with the motorbike.

The Convict was charged with an attempt to commit crime, to wit, robbery, but pleaded not guilty to the charge levelled against him by the Prosecution, in both his preliminary statement and evidence-in-chief. The case was tried for almost a year, and after a full trial, he was found guilty and imprisoned for 10 years, after the Judge had taken into consideration some mitigation factors, and the months that he had been in custody, while the case was being tried.

His Honour, Aboagye Tandoh, was the presiding Judge, while Chief Superintendent Tuaruka Duuti, was the Prosecutor.
