The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho has entreated Members of Parliament (MPs) to be present in the chamber on time and also pay attention on the floor of the House while business is being transacted.
The Speaker informed the Lawmakers that they should come early so that they could dispose of whatever they could before the House goes on recess for the Elections.
He also said that the House’s starting time in the mornings on Wednesday and Thursday was not the best, adding that he the Speaker and some Hon. Members come very early waiting to get people (Members) into the chamber.
He added that from next week, the House had to start exactly at 10:00am in order to see what business could be transacted before the break for elections.
‘Mr Speaker, it is necessary that we bring our people to start at exactly 10am so that we finish what we have for the meeting. So Mr Speaker I agree with you,’ the Deputy Majority Leader of Parliament, Alfred Agbesi said.
For his part, the Minority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu also agreed entirely with the sentiments the Speaker had expressed that they needed to be in the House early enough to begin the transacting of business.
For the commencement of public business, we don’t even have as many as 50 Members here. So if we have to sit for two or three weeks, let us show greater diligence than we have done and carry the House with us otherwise if anybody decides to take us on, I think the House may be brought to shame. So let’s see what we can do but let’s have the sufficient numbers to help us transact the business of the House.’
The Minority Leader further stated that at the Business Committee on Thursday morning, they had to wait for a very long time before they convened the minimum number to transact business, adding that if the Speaker asked him whether they had the numbers to even take decisions, he wouldn’t want to go on that path.. ‘So Mr Speaker, I think we should demonstrate greater seriousness than we have done otherwise it is not the best for the house.
The Speaker also informed the Lawmakers to pay attention on the floor of the House while business was being transacted, adding that they should kindly pay attention to the Chair and also assist the Chair.
It was few minutes past 11am when the House started business on Thursday.
